Welcome to this edition of the Thermal Circle in this edition the new Horus by FrSky, the Jedi, Pitbull, Shinto and Pike Precision F3B planes and the Egida F3J model. Model Flight has landed a new Hangar 9 shipment and the new Hangar 9 ASW 20 is in stock and available now from Model Flight. Coming soon is a large shipment of Baudis products and all these new models will be here soon. Model Flight has also landed a Spektrum shipment and has all current radios and radio gear in stock. Hyperion Australia is now FrSky distributors and has these radios in stock and has also landed a new Jeti shipment. Horus

The Horus is an all new 2.4Ghz module aircraft, sailplane and helicopter radio imported into Australia by Hyperion Australia a distributor of FrSky in Australia. This radio is an all new 16-32 channel system with all channels having equal performance, The Horus has a backlit color screen and the gimbals are a hall style with 6 ball bearings providing smooth precise operation of the gimbals on this radio.

The Horus utilises integrated 2.4ghz technology and with modules in this radio many types of receivers can be used in this radio. The Horus uses a selector input for programming and the radio and model memories can be expanded with an SD card and can also be software updated. This radio has been totally re designed when compared with Taranis and it features all new programming when compare with Taranis, the screens are different and the radio has been totally reconfigured for use. This radio can be firmware updated, new programming and additional features can be added to this radio by software updates allowing the radio to evolve with the user. These firmware updates are done with an SD card from a laptop.

This radio has a flight mode function and this function allows for different model settings to be switched during flight essentially different "phases" of flight, have different settings. For competition soaring this is really the only way to get the settings for launch and for F3B models the settings for the distance, thermal and speed tasks to be activated during flight. The use of flight modes in this radio is the best feature of this RC system it allows complicated models to be set up properly for all phases of flight. You can adjust trim, rates and mixers by the flick of a switch and even name the phase on the radio when switched. These flight modes are more useful to optimise sailplanes during flight. The radio also offers an SD card setup allowing the saving, and expanding of model memories and also a software update capability

The Horus offers sophisticated programming to meet the needs of of even the most experienced Air plane and Helicopter pilots. In aircraft mode this radio has many different programming options for setting up all different types of model aircraft. The Horus provides telemetry that displays real time telemetry, including receiver voltage signal data, variometer and others!! Alarms can be programmed to warn of low voltage and signal strength problems. Telemetry is highly useful and available with Horus

Dual rates and exponential are available on the aileron, elevator and rudder and you can also assign dual rates to switches on the Horus. This radio has an excellent amount of servo set-up options and a mix monitor allowing easy visual reference when making adjustments you can see the servo movements on the screen. Travel adjust can adjust the servos travel and sub trim can be used to adjust the centering of the servo and servo reverse function reverses the servos. The Horus can also set differential, less down going aileron and and more upward movement increasing efficiency in the turn and reducing the need for aileron to rudder mix.

The Horus flap settings allow for programmable flap and elevator and also adjustable flight modes to adjust flap settings and position and you can assign flap to sliders or switches. A graphic display on the screen provides visual reference as you program these settings. With the flap function providing many different settings it allows for elevator trim adjustment and allows for different elevator trim settings with different flap positions. The Horus has many programmable mixers allowing for many adjustments to be made in the mixing functions in aircraft type models. The radio offers different timing options in the aircraft mode, count up and count down are available and timers can be assigned to switches.

In helicopter mode this unit features many different adjustments in the programming to get the best performance from your helicopter. The Horus offers a switch select menu, you can assign switches in the switch select menu and a number of different swash plate settings to match the cc pm set-up in your helicopter. The Horus provides for sophisticated flight mode programming allowing to switch between hover, 3D and aerobatic settings.

Jedi F3B

Our latest F3B model. We left wing base depth 220mm, the same as Fosa Lift, but we have redesigned wing tips for better agility and turning performance. The aim was to create a model, which is easier to control and has better direction keeping. However it was long journey to the final version. Whole season we tested many Jedi prototypes – various fuse length, wingspan, V-tail angle, elevator size etc. Nearly each competition in the season 2013 we flew another modification of Jedi. Air foil is designed more for speed performance. Thanks to the frame design, the stability, we also have achieved the same result during launch as Faso Lift, which is highly acclaimed for the performance during launch and duration. Competition results make us happy. Frequently the pilots of Jedi are the fastest ones like Reinhard Liese in Nardt 2014 or Thomas Dylla in Kircheim 2014. Andreas Böhlen also flies Jedi in season 2014 and he won Nardt and after the competition he is the leader of FAI World Cup F3B 2014. Construction of model is fully composite with carbon in all stressed parts. For wing spar is used high modular carbon with very low ductility and kevlar honeycomb, which resulted in light and very stiff construction. Also fuselage is almost 100% carbon composite with 2,4 GHz friendly nose and nose cone If requested we are able to prepare extra strong fuselage with double UHM carbon. The surface of the model is coloured by car-colors - please see used colours in our company. We can offer you possibility of any personal colour design you would like in addition to our standard colour schemes. All versions are ready for RDS assembling to wings and come with RDS linkage and wiring harness. On request we can prepare LDS for flaps. Also possible to order completed model with installed servos, cables, battery pack, etc. - you only put receiver and fly. Please see detail of complete finishing service. Pitbull F3B

Pitbull is our first model, which is specially designed for F3F competition. However it can also be used in F3B category and some pilots use it in F3B successfully. Idea of Pitbull came from tests of one F3B profile. During the hundreds hours of testing we noticed that the profile is incredible fast in turns. So it suggested itself that the profile is ideal for task in F3F with large number of turns, where the turning performance is essentials. The model is produced in both F3F and F3B lay-up. Please see below details of standard versions - F3F strong, F3F light and F3B. Double or triple carbon F3F version on special request. Pitbull is flown by some pilots in season 2014 and the results are fantastic. Pike Precision F3B

It has been 5 years since Samba Models released to the world the Pike Perfect one of the first standard F3J planes and this was in cooperation with Philip Kolb who designed the sailplane. Another 5 years later Samba Model are happy to produce another great soaring machine out of our Pike series and to add their experience and expertise in designing, calculating tooling and computing the creation of the Pike Precision our newest design in the F3B and F3F category. Tooling of moulds was made on HSC tooling machine to reach the top quality in mould construction and to promote perfect accuracy. The Pike Precision F3B and F3F is produced with the latest known technology and with use of modern composites and special orders of this F3B model are available on request. Basic version is F3B with a weight of 2000grams and the second version is F3F with more carbon and a heavier layup for harder manipulation on the slope. Maximum ballast is 2kg and the centre of gravity will remain the same with all additions of ballast. Models will be delivered with the RDS system installed, everything installed in the wing during production including the wiring harness, MG, JR DS and MKS servos will all fit. The wing surface will not be disturbed by servo hatches and means the surface is aerodynamically clean. The Model Flight version will include full RDS hardware, model covers, ballast and a pre installed wiring harness and Model Flight can also order special colours to the buyers request on order and other options are, double carbon spread tow versions and ready to fly version with all radio gear pre installed at Samba. This model will be available in 2000gm F3B layup 2200 gram F3F layup that will be stronger for the slope and cost less. The wingspan is 116 inches, wing area is 919 square inches the aerofoil is a Samba Models special and the length is 56 inches weight is from 2000 grams upwards depending on layup and all models will carry up to 2000grams ballast. Congratulations to the Samba Model Company and Model Flight with the importation of this well optimised F3B sailplane designed by world champions to be successful in the racing class F3B and racing class f3F and utilises the latest construction techniques and to an excellent design.

Shinto F3B

The new Shinto F3b is the latest sailplane from Vladimirs models, providing a new F3b sailplane that is well designed utilising the current trends in F3b design with a supurb planform, light and strong carbon composite construction and all new aerofoils where used on this class leading F3b model sailplane. David Pratley from Hyperion Australia is the Australian agent for all Vladimirs models and he provides the Australian scene with all choices available from this leading constructor of composite molded models, the company and organisation that is Vladimirs models. The Shinto has a length of 1471mm, a wingspan of 2995mm and a wing area of 55.59 sq dm and utilises the wingsection M 1647922s straak, an all new wing section provided by this model. The aspect ratio used by the Shinto is 16.14% and the horizontal tail area 5,58 sq dm and the horizontal tail aspect ratio 5,66% and the tail aerofoil is the M008, the vertical tail area 2,4 sq dm. The Shinto has the following weights, wing tips, 1210 grams, tail with control horns, 65 grams, wing joiner 115 grams, and the models ready to fly weight 1950 grams. The wing loading on the Shinto is 35.2 Gr/qdm. This model has already been released in Europe and the reports coming from people flying the Shinto, that this model is world class, a supurb and well optimised design for F3B and F3F competition as provided by Hyperion Australia.

Egida F3J

The EGIDA is the latest design from Jaro Muller. He designed the EGIDA to incorporate the successes of his past designs, while developing a model to take advantage of the latest material enhancements. Jaro successfully made the EGIDA 63 ounces full strength with better handling than the RL, a better hang rate than the competition, and legs and L/D like the Satori. In our opinion the EGIDA is Jaro's greatest design to date. The EGIDA handling is much improved over the RL, the EGIDA is very easy to fly and while in a turn it required very little rudder, and can completely be flown with the right stick. This is because of the extra dihedral built into the tips. This creates a very user friendly model, and allows you to focus on the air more than flying the plane. The aileron area is also increased and they are extended all to the tip allowing for a less drag in a turn and increased roll rate. The most surprising part of the design was the effectiveness of the V-tail. Jaro put a very large V-tail on the EGIDA.in the past V-tails where undersized and had some nasty characteristics like snapping and bad landing control. We were pleased to find that the EGIDA did not have any of the bad habits. The V-tail actually had more landing control at slow speeds than the X-tail Espada RL with big stabs. Also during tests we tried to snap the model and giving the model full up in a turn did not snap it, and also full up and full rudder did not snap the model. The EGIDA is a very stable platform, it grooves and locks into a thermal turn very well. The flap size was also increased compared to the RL. This allows for very slow landings and steep approaches. The big difference that we saw with the larger flaps was when a thermal came through on landing. In that condition the pilot needs to dive to stay at the same altitude, but with other models this greatly increases the approach speed.
